Montacute Wallling; A honey gold coloured limestone traditionally quarried in Somerset is a Jurassic limestone from the Toarcian, or Upper Lias, stage. It is a well cemented medium to coarse grained limestone characterised by its warm colour and marked bedding planes. Montacute also known locally as Hamstone, is a popular stone with stonemasons and sculptors for decorative features such as doorway arches and bell openings in church towers. This beautiful stone has been used in building & landscaping for more than 1000 years mainly in somerset towns and villages and has been traced in parts of medieval church towers & bridges throughout the county.
